Breast Cancer Fund

More than half of breast cancer cases remain unexplained by traditional risk factors. Scientific studies indicate that many of these cases have environmental links. The Breast Cancer Fund is the leading national organization focused on identifying – and advocating for the elimination of – the environmental and preventable causes of the disease. For more details on the organization’s work, visit www.breastcancerfund.org

Highlights of Breast Cancer Fund’s Work:

Pure Prevention
www.pureprevention.org: Only one in 10 women who have breast cancer have a genetic history of the disease. What we put on and in our bodies can make a difference. By learning the facts, we can make smart choices about the products we use every day. That's why the Breast Cancer Fund and LUNA Bar have launched Pure Prevention, a campaign to raise awareness about the environmental causes of breast cancer and empower us to ask, act and live to reduce our risk. Pure Prevention focuses on 5 Tips for easy, everyday actions: Create a Healthy Home; Eat Smart; Choose Safe Cosmetics; Get Outside; and Join the Campaign to spread the word about prevention!

The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics
www.safecosmetics.org: The Breast Cancer Fund is a founding member of this national coalition of environmental and health advocates, which is targeting manufacturers that use known or suspected carcinogens, mutagens and reproductive toxins in personal care products, and pressuring them to replace these ingredients with safe alternatives. Major manufacturers including OPI Nail Products, have agreed to remove some of the most dangerous chemicals from their cosmetics as a result of pressure from the campaign. More than 450 companies have committed to making truly safe products by signing the campaign’s Compact for Safe Cosmetics.

California State Legislation
www.breastcancerfund.org/california: The Breast Cancer Fund has sponsored a variety of bills to help identify and reduce the risk of breast cancer amongst women. Some of the Bills that have passed include:
  • SB 1379, the California Environmental Contaminant Biomonitoring Program: Signed in Sept. 2006 by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, the legislation creates the nation’s first statewide biomonitoring program, a program that will help doctors and scientists better understand the relationship between chemical exposures and breast cancer by monitoring the “pollution in people”.
  • SB 484, the Cosmetics Safety Act of 2005: In an advance for the safety of cosmetics products, the governor signed SB 484 bringing additional scrutiny to an industry accustomed to only minimal oversight. The chemical and cosmetic industries both vigorously opposed the bill.
  • AB 929, the Radiation Safety Bill: In 2005, Gov. Schwarzenegger signed AB 929, establishing quality and testing standards to ensure that patients receive the lowest possible dose of radiation without compromising image quality. Currently, X-ray equipment is only tested once every four to six years and may over expose patients to ionizing radiation, a known breast carcinogen.
